Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that grow on surfaces and secret extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) providing an environment for increased resistance to phagocytosis and antibiotics.
The microbiological principle of biofilms may be beneficial in explaining and assessing conditions such as dermatophytoma, acne, psoriasis, toxic shock syndrome.
CFI can develop client specific test methods to evaluate antibiotics, antimicrobial agents, fibrous materials, etc. with regard to (as appropriate)
∙ prevention of initial adhesion events
∙ removal of established biofilms
∙ potential for development of resistant microflora
∙ minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC)
∙ minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) |
