Biofilms can serve a beneficial role in the containment and remediation of environmental pollutants. Individuals at CFI have experience in the bioremediation of a variety of soil and groundwater contaminants including ∙ Inorganics (Nitrate, Cyanide) ∙ Heavy Metals ∙ Energetic Compounds (TNT, RDX, HMX) ∙ Chlorinated Organics (PCE, TCE, VC)
Biofilms are frequently associated with problems such as biofouling, dental caries, and infections related to internal medical devices. CFI staff members have experience in efficacy testing, process validation, and method development in a number of product areas including ∙ Oral Care Products ∙ Household Products ∙ Topical Antimicrobial Products
There exists the potential for use of biological warfare agents including microorganisms and biological toxins during a terrorist attack or war. The simplest and most frequent episodes involving distribution of biological agents has been through food and water contamination. CFI has participated in the production of biofilm-based sensor systems for detection of waterborne pathogens.
